CADIP: Togo programs
Sarah P’s comments:  The key to finding a good volunteer opp is to make sure you do your research. The Canadian Alliance for Development Initiatives and Projects (CADIP) is a non-profit Canadian organization dedicated to promoting peace, cooperation, tolerance, and understanding in multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and international surroundings. They offer affordable (their words) short term volunteer projects. CADIP opportunities are listed regularly on Idealist so I decided to do a check-in e-mail which is one of the tools I use to check volunteer opportunities.  If they reply, I take this as a positive. Is this case, they did and I have included their e-mail below.

Thank you for your message and your interest in our activities. The international volunteer programs are an affordable and exciting opportunity for involvement in wide variety of projects. You can access the short-term volunteer programs with updated list of the free places and detailed descriptions of the projects by following this link: www.cadip.org/workcamps. I can recommend the projects: Teaching and promoting the library in Yeviepe, Togo (www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-togo) and Managing a library and promoting reading among school children in Kpalime, Togo (www.cadip.org/volunteering-in-togo).
The placement of volunteers is done on a first-come first-served basis and projects usually fill up pretty quickly. That’s why we advise all the interested volunteers to get enrolled as soon as they’ve found in the program the project they would like to join. The enrollment procedure is quick and easy and can be completed online (www.cadip.org/enrol).
Each applicant chooses the projects he/she wants to apply for and puts them in order of preference in the Volunteer enrollment form. Only the first project choice is a compulsory field, however one or two alternative choices will increase your chances to be placed. We proceed the placement in this same order. Our organization is well-known for its easy and fast procedure. Your placement will be confirmed no later than 7 days after you submit all required documents and payment information. With the application we require the payment information because we charge the participation fee and the annual membership right after successful placement and before confirming it to the person. Please, note that we don’t have an application fee or any other kind of non-refundable deposits, which means that if we cannot accept you for any reason, you will not be charged anything.
In terms of fees, we have the best pricing in North America. Other experience-based travel opportunities, including tourist packages and other volunteer organizers, bill in the thousands of dollars and often demand a non-refundable deposit equal to our fee. At CADIP, we believe in the importance of making volunteering abroad affordable and keep the cost of the experience-based travel we offer low.

About us:The Arajuno Road Project (ARP)/Proyecto Ruta del Arajuno was created in 2008 with the goal of supporting the schools and improving the opportunities available in the communities along the road located between the small city of Puyo and the rural community of Arajuno – a culturally and ecologically diverse area – in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The program works in rural communities providing support in education, improving the infrastructure and learning environment of schools, and working on community development and conservation programs, such as school gardens and reforestation.

Position summary:ARP established a center in collaboration with one of our partner communities in 2016, which acts both as the base for ARP operations and community functions. This position helps with community center development, and runs basic courses and opportunities. Center activities have included infrastructure improvements, tutoring for primary school students, English classes for teachers and community members, overseeing the library, cultural events, and in the future, computer classes.
What we ask from you: Volunteers/interns should be able to commit to at least one pre-defined service period and priority will be given to those applying for consecutive periods. You will live on site in the dormitory at the community center. After an initial orientation, you will be expected to run agreed upon community center activities weekday afternoons/evenings; corresponding planning and administrative duties will be on your own schedule. You will also be expected to participate in a weekly minga (community service) with the community one afternoon each week. Documenting your work will be important for the long-term success of the program and future volunteers. If you have any special abilities/skills, you are also welcome to propose a community class.
Responsibilities:

  • Run 1-2 classes per week
  • Oversee library hours and keep library resources organized
  • Help with overall infrastructure development and maintenance of the center

Volunteer: Library Assistant

Sarah P’s comments:  I first heard about the Sand Castle Library in 2015 when the previous Director contacted me and asked for volunteers.  We corresponded so I could determine whether it was this a legit opportunity which it definitely is. Then in-stepped Librarian Cate Caryle who flew down from Canada and volunteered. If you are seeking a volunteer opportunity and/or a way to gain international experience, Cate recommends this organization and just forwarded a message from current Director Cam O-Brien:
This year Bookmobile reading specialists are adding science to the model and using it to teach science concepts with reading comprehension. The library will have a STEM component with Fridays dedicated to hands-on activities. We can use lesson plans and volunteers. Skype lessons on these topics would be helpful as well as a volunteer librarian with Spanish to assist the current staff person.

Volunteer: 2017 Guatemala Service Trip

Sarah P’s comments: I received this trip information from a few sources including from Cate Carlyle who commented: I found it to be a very worthwhile and positive experience. Cate is a Canadian librarian who volunteers internationally and is an editor for the International Journal of Librarianship.

This is the eighth consecutive spring that LWB is traveling to the Miguel Angel Asturias Academy in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Since 2010 over 120 librarians and library science students have spent more than 40 working days onsite to help our partner realize and grow their dream of an open stacks, circulating school library. What started as cinder blocks in 2010 is now the vibrant center of the school.
LWB uses this annual service trip to execute our remote work on the ground, to discuss emerging needs with our partner, and to re-connect with students and school staff. We invite you to work alongside us this year from April 21 to May 1, 2017.
This year’s work at the Academy will include ongoing collection management activities (cataloguing, processing, and organizing materials), library programming for students, and training for teachers. LWB works with Asturias to also provide opportunities for trip participants to engage in activities that will help nurture a comprehensive understanding of libraries, education and culture in Guatemala. Typically trip participants are also given the opportunity to help finalize the last weekend activity (for example, visit scenic Lake Atitlán or trek to one of Guatemala’s volcanic peaks).
Primary Projects

  • Cataloging, processing, and adding new items to the library’s collection.
  • Library programming targeting all students and levels through multi-day library events.
  • Professional development workshops for teachers supporting library integration into the curriculum.

Housing and Food
While in Quetzaltenango (Xela), participants will stay and eat most of their meals at the COFA Catholic Retreat Centre. On the weekends meals are eaten with a local family or at local restaurants. Vegetarian options will be available.
Expectations
All trip volunteers are expected to:

  • Attend online meetings (3-4) to discuss projects and receive training on the Asturias Library and the local community context. These meetings are mandatory for all volunteers.
  • Join and contribute to a working team before the trip.
  • Participate in pre-and post-trip assessments (e.g. evaluation surveys).

Program Fees
The program fee is $1525 CAD* (= ~$1160 USD) for 11 days. This total covers lodging, food, transportation and entrance to all activities within Guatemala, as well as a fundraising fee to support LWB programs. Trip participants are responsible for paying their own airfare to and from Guatemala.
There is a $500 CAD non-refundable deposit due by all accepted applicants by February 24. The remainder of the fees ($1025 CAD) can be paid at the same time or by March 10*.
In addition, all trip participants are expected to bring extra spending money for additional purchases such as souvenirs and snacks, as well as occasional meals in Guatemala ($50-100 is adequate).
Note, in previous years some participants have created crowdfunding campaigns to wholly or partially offset the costs of the trip. LWB uses our social media channels to promote those campaigns for participants.
Important Dates

  • Successful applicants selected and notified – February 18
  • $500 CAD* non-refundable deposit due – February 24

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT) has been running student service opportunities to Malawi for several years, so it was no coincidence the university was one of the first to hear about the fire. The student service initiatives, known as TEAM Malawi, are part of a multidisciplinary program based on a community wellness model of health care that incorporates technology, education, advocacy, and medicine (TEAM).

VT’s University Libraries joined TEAM Malawi when a call for library expertise went out on social media. Anita Walz, open education, copyright, and scholarly communications librarian, spotted the tweet and directed it to me. Honestly, I had my doubts about what I could do to help, but as I picked my way through the snow and ice to the meeting at the College of Engineering, it hit me: There are big-hearted librarians all over the world who will help.

Tapping the international community

First, I sent an email to ALA’s International Relations Round Table (IRRT) Chair John Hickok before the 2016 ALA Midwinter Meeting. He wrote back stating that IRRT endorsed publicizing the relief effort. IRRT not only published a story about the fire in International Leads but also wrote about it on its Facebook page and blog.
Second, I contacted the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Julia Brungs, policy and research officer based in The Hague, Netherlands, put me in touch with Douwe Drijfhout, director of preservation services at the National Library of South Africa. Drijfhout offered to help and connected me with the National Library Service of Malawi.
Back home at VT, Brian Mathews, associate dean of learning, emailed a number of resources to Felix P. Majawa, university librarian at Mzuzu University. The resources, assembled by Mathews while leading the ongoing renovation of Newman Library, included information about learning spaces, details on VT’s philosophy and characteristics, and documents on active learning environments and libraries of interest.

Safe Passage, a 501(C)3 non-profit development-focused organization, is seeking an exceptional individual to join our Volunteer Team as the Library Coordinator. Known in Guatemala as Camino Seguro, Safe Passage’s mission is to empower the poorest at-risk children and families who live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community by creating opportunity and fostering dignity through the power of education. Safe Passage is a secular, non-political organization.
The Position: The Library Coordinator promotes literacy skill development and a love of reading among all members of the Safe Passage Community, including students from preschool-high school, parents, teachers, staff, and volunteers. The Coordinator creates relevant and engaging activities to promote literacy and critical/creative thinking, as well as facilitates conversations around books that stimulate interest in reading and gaining knowledge.
The Coordinator will:

  • Supervise a library schedule that provides visits from classes for read alouds, reading/writing activities, and silent self-selected reading; manage current programming and develop new initiatives
  • Create and maintain a welcoming and attractive environment that promotes reading as fun for everyone, encouraging reading clubs and reading buddy-system between older and younger students
  • Manage library book-lending system with plan to expand program to include weekend access to the library; maintain books and inventory
  • Devise systems for on-going sustainability of library; write monthly reports to administration on library progress and proposals
  • Lead library committee; train and supervise assistant librarians
  • Keep it fun and creative. Be innovative and creative in engaging and motivating students to read!

Qualifications:

  • Passion for Safe Passage’s mission, commitment to service and ability to engage children, families, staff and volunteers;
  • Be a reader (reads regularly and for pleasure) and understands the importance of choice and access to books in becoming a reader
  • One or more years experience working directly in youth education, particularly with students at high-risk
  • Experience with creating programs that motivate children to recognize and realize their learning potential in the area of language and/or social sciences
  • Knowledge of children’s literature by genre, age, and interest (particularly high interest/low reading level books)
  • Familiarity with library programs and how to set up a dynamic library centered on getting children and youth “hooked on books”
  • Ability to design relevant and engaging activities around books that promote critical and creative thinking faculties among all ages
  • University degree (preferable), if not, demonstrated experience developing critical learning activities for youth

Volunteer: Education Program Coordinator

Sarah P’s comments:  Position includes managing a library and offers a small stipend in addition to paying expenses. Duration is 13-24 months and is a way to gain experience both in international librarianship and with a NGO.

Duration: 13-24 months
Job Summary: The Education Program Coordinator (EPC) manages a wide range of GHEI educational programming in coordination with the local Education Program Manager (EPM)/Assistant Country Director (ACD). In addition to management duties, the EPC will continue to build the capacity of the EPM/ACD, with the ultimate goal of combining the EPC and EPM duties into a single, locally staffed position. Additional duties may also include research activities, grant proposal writing, curriculum development and running training sessions.
Responsibilities:
Management & Administration

  • In collaboration with the EPM/ACD:
  • Manage and support the education team.
  • Work with the EPM/ACD to assess, revise and record program strategies, by completing the Annual Operational Plans (AOPs) and program protocols.
  • Generate district reports for internal use, funders, and local government agencies.
  • Maintain and update program-specific databases to track program indicators.
  • Create and monitor budgets and expenses for all education programs.

Programming & Development

  • Conduct relevant research in the community to inform program planning and development.
  • Continue to make girls’ education a priority, building and strengthening existing programs, and developing new initiatives, as required and appropriate.
  • Manage, coordinate, train and implement the new Mother Mentor Program, in collaboration with the health and education teams, to promote stimulation and development in children.
  • Monitor and evaluate all education programs with the EPM/ACD and education team.
  • Continually assess and revise curricula for the education programs.

Teaching & Training

  • Improve quality of teaching by providing relevant training and guided support.
  • Conduct teacher evaluations, providing comprehensive feedback and continuous monitoring.
  • Teach for the Youth Education Program (YEP).
  • Work with EPM/ACD and Country Director to design a system to identify, train and develop staff, as well as volunteers in the community.

Collaboration & Networking

  • Write, edit and/or revise grant proposals, and collaborate with Development Director to identify needs and key priorities.
  • Build support amongst businesses and organizations to encourage financial contributions and support for educational projects.
  • Communicate and network with the District Assembly Office, specifically education personnel responsible for school welfare, to build organizational knowledge of and communication lines with projects in the district and opportunities for support and funding, etc.

Library

  • Manage and run the library, working closely with the Librarian.
  • Mentor and support the GHEI Librarian, his development, and the successful running of the library.
  • Schedule a series of smaller events at the library, such as educational movie nights and quizzes, and work with the librarian on marketing, coordinating and planning for events.
  • In coordination with the librarian and EPM/ACD, improve and develop new monitoring tools for the library (e.g. track attendance to help identify impact).
  • Support the Librarian with the Soroano Book Box Project, while still seeking opportunities to build a library for this neighboring community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably a Masters in a related field (Education, International
  • Development, Non-Profit Management).
  • At least 1 year of project management experience, preferably in a developing country.
  • Experience with logic models and program design.
  • Experience in teaching, curriculum design, and rubrics.
  • Experience in conducting research.
  • Knowledge and experience in proposal writing.
  • Familiarity with budgets and the tracking of expenditures.
  • Proficient in MS Office (specifically Word, Powerpoint and Excel)
  • Ability to live and work in a resource-poor environment with limited internet access, intermittent power outages, and restricted diet.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural awareness and communication skills.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders in Ghana and internationally-based staff.
  • Commitment to the highest professional standards, ethics and values.
  • Resilient, patient, flexible, and willing to perform a wide variety of tasks as they arise.

Compensation:
The Education Program Coordinator receives a local salary equivalent to $160 USD/month. Free housing, electricity, all business related travel, in-country work permits and Visas are also paid for by GHEI. Relocation costs (i.e. airfare), vaccinations, and evacuation insurance are not covered by GHEI.

Sarah P’s comments: A chance to become involved with international work without leaving home and part-time as well for anyone who is working.
1. 3 Librarians needed to identify, organize and curate Open Educational Resources for an online global university currently being established for populations in developing countries. Experienced retired librarians are most welcome to apply. Please be available for 6-8 hours a week with a minimum 6 month commitment.
Our all volunteer group enjoys some Google backing.
2. 2 Librarians wanted for helping us design and develop a networked organization, beginning with integrating in house activities with our growing reliance upon social media activities to serve professors, students, university deopertments, NGO and nonprofit organizations, mainly within the developing world.
Retired librarians are warmly welcomed to share their expertise, imaginations and experience with our all volunteer-driven group,which sports some Google backing.
 

The International Professors Project ( IPP ) is a global network of professors assisting emerging nations, especially in higher education. We accomplish this as academic citizens of the world, on university campuses around the globe, and also remotely via email, Google+, Skype, LinkedIn, etc.
Academic professionals and students now are part of IPP’s development .
IPP is an innovation, inspired in large part by current trends towards globalization.It uses interconnections , conultations, promotions and recruiting to fulfill its mission.
We are a technologically-oriented, hybrid academic organization, working to meet the higher education faculty and libarian needs around the world. Google has for years been generous, with a grant, a gift, volunteers, and free tools.
Helping less developed countries improve domestic educational opportunities, especially by assisting professors, is how we spend much of our volunteer time.
Spreading partly by our dedicated networking diffusion, with each participating professors group, individual academic, and university department making its own cultural, social, ideological, and technological contributions.
International Professors was also founded to create and maintain a new institutional pathway towards an appropriate and ‘developing-world-sensitive’ internationalization of higher education.
We also work to engage and volunteer for universities and professors less attached to locale, such as transnational and expatriate professors, and those academics who identify themselves as international professors.

ELIGIBILITY AND BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Applicants are required to fulfill the requirements;-
1. Be 16 years or older, unless approved by LUYODEFO and accompanied by an adult.

ARRIVAL IN UGANDA
Flying into Uganda, you arrive at the Entebbe International Airport on the shores of Lake Victoria, about 3 km from the town centre of Entebbe. Entebbe Airport is about 45 minutes to 2 hours car ride south from Kampala depending on road traffic. Please be sure to have emailed the LUYODEFO Director your flight details prior to your arrival so he can arrange you to be met and greeted on your arrival.
AIRPORT PICK-UP
Kampala is the capital city of Uganda and is approximately 45 minutes to 2 hours away from Entebbe International Airport, depending on traffic. At the airport, LUYODEFO staff will be ready to receive you and we get an Airport Taxi take you to your hotel or guesthouse in Kampala for check in. The airport transfer will cost about $60 USD, including vehicle, driver and fuel.
TRANSFER FROM KAMPALA TO LUYODEFO IN KASESE
LUYODEFO is located in the village of Kisinga in the Kasese District, about 500 km south west of Kampala. The drive takes about 6 – 8 hours in the bus. Depending on your budget and comfort level, LUYODEFO can recommend and arrange the best transport option for you.
OTHER WAYS TO SUPPORT
Volunteers can also work in their home country helping with the following tasks:
(a). Helping to connect LUYODEFO with institutions around your community (organization, school/ college/ university, sports club, youth group/women group, church, clinic, etc.)
(b). Organising fundraisers – this can be for a specific project or general program.

Sarah P’s comments:  IRRT is really stepping up its game.  There is now an IRRT YouTube Channel and in the March International Leads there was a notice of a very interesting, upcoming webinar about the Fulbright Program. This is am opportunity for USA citizens only. I have more information and resources about the Fulbright Program listed on my Book Resources page (Chapter 8).
This webinar will be held March 14, 2016 at 2:00pm CST.
IRRT will be co-sponsoring a webinar this month on opportunities for LIS professionals in the Fulbright program, including: the application process, getting your workplace on-board with your candidacy and grant, experiences living/working/teaching abroad, and how a Fulbright can enhance your career and studies. This webinar is informal and is not an official webinar sponsored or endorsed by Fulbright, CIES, IIE, or the US State Department.
Co-sponsors of this webinar are the Society of American Archivists’ Stu-dents and New Archives Professionals Roundtable and the International Ar-chival Affairs Roundtable. The speakers will include: (1) Natalie Baur, US Student Researcher; (2) Chris Prom, US Scholar; (3) Richard Sapon-White, US Scholar; (4) Andrea Malone, Fulbright Specialist.
