Safe Passage, a 501(C)3 non-profit development-focused organization, is seeking an exceptional individual to join our Volunteer Team as the Library Coordinator. Known in Guatemala as Camino Seguro, Safe Passage’s mission is to empower the poorest at-risk children and families who live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community by creating opportunity and fostering dignity through the power of education. Safe Passage is a secular, non-political organization.
The Position: The Library Coordinator promotes literacy skill development and a love of reading among all members of the Safe Passage Community, including students from preschool-high school, parents, teachers, staff, and volunteers. The Coordinator creates relevant and engaging activities to promote literacy and critical/creative thinking, as well as facilitates conversations around books that stimulate interest in reading and gaining knowledge.
The Coordinator will:

  • Supervise a library schedule that provides visits from classes for read alouds, reading/writing activities, and silent self-selected reading; manage current programming and develop new initiatives
  • Create and maintain a welcoming and attractive environment that promotes reading as fun for everyone, encouraging reading clubs and reading buddy-system between older and younger students
  • Manage library book-lending system with plan to expand program to include weekend access to the library; maintain books and inventory
  • Devise systems for on-going sustainability of library; write monthly reports to administration on library progress and proposals
  • Lead library committee; train and supervise assistant librarians
  • Keep it fun and creative. Be innovative and creative in engaging and motivating students to read!

Qualifications:

  • Passion for Safe Passage’s mission, commitment to service and ability to engage children, families, staff and volunteers;
  • Be a reader (reads regularly and for pleasure) and understands the importance of choice and access to books in becoming a reader
  • One or more years experience working directly in youth education, particularly with students at high-risk
  • Experience with creating programs that motivate children to recognize and realize their learning potential in the area of language and/or social sciences
  • Knowledge of children’s literature by genre, age, and interest (particularly high interest/low reading level books)
  • Familiarity with library programs and how to set up a dynamic library centered on getting children and youth “hooked on books”
  • Ability to design relevant and engaging activities around books that promote critical and creative thinking faculties among all ages
  • University degree (preferable), if not, demonstrated experience developing critical learning activities for youth
  • Advanced Spanish and high level English to promote reading in English, to work with the English Department on book selections, and to communicate with international donors
  • Strong communication skills to work with teachers, students, and project coordinators in promoting a culture of literacy and love of reading across the curriculum and the community
  • Cultural sensitivity, ability to connect across cultural and linguistic divides
  • Strong organizational skills and self-direction
  • Experience living or working in Guatemala or other developing nations (preferred)
  • Ability to commit to this position for a minimum one year

Volunteer: Education Program Coordinator

Job Summary: The Education Program Coordinator (EPC) manages a wide range of GHEI educational programming in coordination with the local Education Program Manager (EPM)/Assistant Country Director (ACD). In addition to management duties, the EPC will continue to build the capacity of the EPM/ACD, with the ultimate goal of combining the EPC and EPM duties into a single, locally staffed position. Additional duties may also include research activities, grant proposal writing, curriculum development and running training sessions.
Responsibilities:
Management & Administration

  • In collaboration with the EPM/ACD:
  • Manage and support the education team.
  • Work with the EPM/ACD to assess, revise and record program strategies, by completing the Annual Operational Plans (AOPs) and program protocols.
  • Generate district reports for internal use, funders, and local government agencies.
  • Maintain and update program-specific databases to track program indicators.
  • Create and monitor budgets and expenses for all education programs.

Programming & Development

  • Conduct relevant research in the community to inform program planning and development.
  • Continue to make girls’ education a priority, building and strengthening existing programs, and developing new initiatives, as required and appropriate.
  • Manage, coordinate, train and implement the new Mother Mentor Program, in collaboration with the health and education teams, to promote stimulation and development in children.
  • Monitor and evaluate all education programs with the EPM/ACD and education team.
  • Continually assess and revise curricula for the education programs.

Teaching & Training

  • Improve quality of teaching by providing relevant training and guided support.
  • Conduct teacher evaluations, providing comprehensive feedback and continuous monitoring.
  • Teach for the Youth Education Program (YEP).
  • Work with EPM/ACD and Country Director to design a system to identify, train and develop staff, as well as volunteers in the community.

Collaboration & Networking

  • Write, edit and/or revise grant proposals, and collaborate with Development Director to identify needs and key priorities.
  • Build support amongst businesses and organizations to encourage financial contributions and support for educational projects.
  • Communicate and network with the District Assembly Office, specifically education personnel responsible for school welfare, to build organizational knowledge of and communication lines with projects in the district and opportunities for support and funding, etc.

Library

  • Manage and run the library, working closely with the Librarian.
  • Mentor and support the GHEI Librarian, his development, and the successful running of the library.
  • Schedule a series of smaller events at the library, such as educational movie nights and quizzes, and work with the librarian on marketing, coordinating and planning for events.
  • In coordination with the librarian and EPM/ACD, improve and develop new monitoring tools for the library (e.g. track attendance to help identify impact).
  • Support the Librarian with the Soroano Book Box Project, while still seeking opportunities to build a library for this neighboring community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably a Masters in a related field (Education, International
  • Development, Non-Profit Management).
  • At least 1 year of project management experience, preferably in a developing country.
  • Experience with logic models and program design.
  • Experience in teaching, curriculum design, and rubrics.
  • Experience in conducting research.
  • Knowledge and experience in proposal writing.
  • Familiarity with budgets and the tracking of expenditures.
  • Proficient in MS Office (specifically Word, Powerpoint and Excel)
  • Ability to live and work in a resource-poor environment with limited internet access, intermittent power outages, and restricted diet.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural awareness and communication skills.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders in Ghana and internationally-based staff.
  • Commitment to the highest professional standards, ethics and values.

Compensation:
The Education Program Coordinator receives a local salary equivalent to $160 USD/month. Free housing, electricity, all business related travel, in-country work permits and Visas are also paid for by GHEI. Relocation costs (i.e. airfare), vaccinations, and evacuation insurance are not covered by GHEI.

1. 3 Librarians needed to identify, organize and curate Open Educational Resources for an online global university currently being established for populations in developing countries. Helping less developed countries improve domestic educational opportunities, especially by assisting professors, is how we spend much of our volunteer time.

International Professors was also founded to create and maintain a new institutional pathway towards an appropriate and ‘developing-world-sensitive’ internationalization of higher education.

ELIGIBILITY AND BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Applicants are required to fulfill the requirements;-

ARRIVAL IN UGANDA
Flying into Uganda, you arrive at the Entebbe International Airport on the shores of Lake Victoria, about 3 km from the town centre of Entebbe. Entebbe Airport is about 45 minutes to 2 hours car ride south from Kampala depending on road traffic. Please be sure to have emailed the LUYODEFO Director your flight details prior to your arrival so he can arrange you to be met and greeted on your arrival.
AIRPORT PICK-UP
Kampala is the capital city of Uganda and is approximately 45 minutes to 2 hours away from Entebbe International Airport, depending on traffic. At the airport, LUYODEFO staff will be ready to receive you and we get an Airport Taxi take you to your hotel or guesthouse in Kampala for check in. The airport transfer will cost about $60 USD, including vehicle, driver and fuel.
TRANSFER FROM KAMPALA TO LUYODEFO IN KASESE
LUYODEFO is located in the village of Kisinga in the Kasese District, about 500 km south west of Kampala. The drive takes about 6 – 8 hours in the bus. Depending on your budget and comfort level, LUYODEFO can recommend and arrange the best transport option for you.
OTHER WAYS TO SUPPORT
Volunteers can also work in their home country helping with the following tasks:
(a). Helping to connect LUYODEFO with institutions around your community (organization, school/ college/ university, sports club, youth group/women group, church, clinic, etc.)

Sarah P’s comments: This is a volunteer position listed as a ‘job’ which is a little confusing.  The position does include room and board and a stipend.  While not strictly library, it is a position supporting literacy and if you have ESL experience and are seeking a way into international work, here is a chance to get your foot in the door.  FYI: this position is restricted to citizens of the United States, Canada, or the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Outreach360 is a non-profit organization working in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Our mission is to enable children to live a life of choice- to help them to stay in school, to be qualified when completing high school to be able to choose between a college education or gainful employment.
We involve American and Canadian high schools, colleges, churches, individuals, and families to teach in our “Learning Centers”, focusing on teaching English to motivated students. We also involve children in fun and exciting English Immersion Camps, where they have the opportunity to engage in fun and unique activities such as art, music and drama while having authentic opportunities to practice and improve their English speaking skills.
We have openings for individuals and couples to join us in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The ideal candidates will be enthusiastic, flexible, love people, speak Spanish and English fluently, have at least five years post undergraduate work or academic experience, have 2+ years international experience in a country other than their own, and have proven leadership and management ability. Both members of couples team will need to qualify as a staff member (Team Leader or Program Leader). Candidates are not able to have partners or spouses who are not leaders nor children accompany them for this position due to the minimal educational opportunities available, the heavy workload, the extreme flexibility required, and the limited living accommodations available. Applicants must be citizens of the United States, Canada, or the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
What:
Your primary role will be to implement and manage challenging and productive academic classes that work to transform the lives of students we serve. You will also be responsible for involving short-term volunteers to be a meaningful contribution to the program and to our results in the community. You will quickly have the opportunity and expectation to take on increasing leadership roles, including administration and supervision. Position Specific Accountabilities:

The Outreach360 Program Leader has overall responsibility for the “difference making” Outreach360 volunteers have, and the success students in the community are having in the program.
The Program Leader’s responsibilities include:

Locations:
The Dominican Republic is a great country with friendly and welcoming people. We are working in the small, beautiful town of Monte Cristi on the northwest coast of the Dominican Republic. It is a great community filled with motivated and deserving children.
The town of Jinotega is located in the mountains of Nicaragua, two hours north of Managua. It is the coffee capital of Nicaragua. This small town is often called the “City of Mists” for the mist that hangs on the surrounding mountain tops.

  • Our Team Leaders and Program Leaders may be living in either of these locations, and may need to occasionally move from one to the other.

Housing:
At all locations you should plan on having living and sleeping facilities the size of a hotel room dorm room, with private bathroom. All meals are eaten in a common area, so there is no need for personal kitchen facilities. Most of your time is spent away from your room, so housing is not critical. We have internet and phone access at all locations. Our Leaders should understand they will be working outside of their room, and be satisfied with very simple yet adequate accommodations.
Additional Considerations:
Outreach360 is a very structured organization, protective of our volunteers and local reputation. We have a no alcohol and no smoking policy. You must maintain appropriate relationships with Outreach360 staff, international volunteers, students, and locals.

The mission of Haven of Peace Academy (HOPAC) is to provide an excellent, Christ-centred, international education that meets western academic standards and equips students to live out a biblical worldview in all areas of life to the glory of God.
Haven of Peace Academy is seeking a Librarian for the 2016/2017 school year. School year: August – June with classes Monday to Friday. HOPAC follows the Cambridge curriculum.
HOPAC, founded in 1994, is an international Christian K-12 school with over 300 students from 33 different countries and a variety of religious backgrounds including Christian, Muslim and Hindu. While the majority of students come from families of missionaries and the non-profit and international business community, one third are Tanzanian.
HOPAC teachers must be committed Christian, 55 years of age or younger with Bachelor degree, at least 3 years of teaching experience and fluency in English. HOPAC expects teaching staff to be supported spiritually and financially through a mission organization or home church. The school provides volunteer staff assistance in the form of a monthly living allowance that covers a significant portion of monthly in-country expenses.

News: Volunteer Librarian Returns…

Sarah P’s comments:  As promised, here is the review of Cate Carlyle’s recent volunteer trip to the Bay Island of Honduras.  This was an opportunity I posted last year after I received an introductory e-mail from the Director.  From the start Cate worked hard to make this opportunity work for her.  She corresponded about how best to help the library and the best times to go and then found time in her busy schedule.  I am glad the result was an overall positive experience and I hope this paves the way for other librarians to volunteers there as well.

I spent this past week, Study Break Week at the university where I work, volunteering in the Sandcastle Library on the island of Roatan Honduras. I covered my own travel and accommodation costs and used personal holiday time away from work. With the help of a generous donation from Mount saint Vincent University’s Faculty of Child & Youth Study, as well as the monetary donations and donations of school supplies from colleagues, friends and family, I was able to take two extra suitcases of school supplies and ship Spanish childrens’ books and readers to Roatan as well. These books and supplies were very much appreciated by the Partners in Education Roatan (PIER (http://www.pierroatan.org/) and Sandcastle Library staff. The kitchen timers (used to train teachers on how long to plan and deliver lessons in the classroom) and the magnifying glasses I donated were of particular interest, while scotch tape are markers are precious commodities as well. The staff also proudly wore the Nova Scotia and Canada tartan lanyards I took down for them.  I worked from 9am to 4pm most days organizing and cleaning the library, classifying the collection and assisting staff with the translation of language arts lesson plans and the integration of games into lesson planning. I also conducted a brief PD session with staff on book talks, conducting read-alouds, reading response, promoting and modeling reading and selecting materials for children.

There are no other public libraries on the island and only one school library. SandcastleLibrary was created in a former resort dive centre, by an ex-pat couple, for the community of Sandy Bay. The PIER President, Cam O’Brien, and Sandcastle staff (shout out to the amazing Celaura in the library) are incredible people; all highly motivated, generous, caring and committed to improving the quality of life on the island. Plans are in the works to move the library closer to town, off the beach, and to increase its size, scope and influence. PIER also runs two bookmobiles which travel to local schools and PIER and the library staff work on training local teachers in more current educational practices. The island does not have a newspaper, parents share the belief with their children that “reading makes you crazy”, and most reading is of the Bible (learned by rote). Reading for pleasure and reading comprehension are two of the hurdles the staff face when promoting literacy on the island. This year, PIER is facing an extra hurdle of trying to keep their second bookmobile on the road. They face a cost of $4000 US to keep the bookmobile running to the schools with books and staff eager to engage with children, promote literacy and model modern teaching methods for the teachers. Monetary donations are desperately needed in order to keep this program running.
 
Geckos on the bookmobile, in the books and on the shelves, mouse droppings, and biting bugs were a new challenge for me (bugs and geckos in the bed also made sleeping a bit tricky). I was able to initiate a “Get Caught Reading” campaign which the library will soon implement, as well as plant the seeds for an open house/community day to try to dispel some of the negative images which the parents have of the library and reading.

We are Libros Para Pueblos, a growing NGO based in Oaxaca, Mexico. Our mission is to inspire the love of reading in Oaxaca’s children. We create and support libraries in communities and help librarians to improve their job with children.

The Graphic Designer position is an exciting volunteer post that offer a wide range of activities: Help to improve all out communication materials through graphic designer, help to develop a visual identity manual, develop brochures, advocacy materials, editorial design, slide shows, photo edition, web design.. Also, you can offer your time for activities like: reading to children once in the week, help us to set up events and workshops. We offer you support to gain experience as a Graphic Designer and support you to integrate to the cultural and social life of Oaxaca
Duration of program: 3-6-12 months
Age requirements: 25-100
Cost: There are no program fees. Volunteers can expect to spend from 20 dollars in food/accommodation.
Other information: We will support volunteers in finding appropriate accommodation, Spanish courses, etc. Recommendation letter at the end of the project.
